In the investment of the State of Cuba: Amount for hotels and some pesos for Agriculture and Education in 2023 – DIARIO DE CUBA

The Cuban government has published its investment figures from January to March in 2023 and to no one’s surprise, hotels, despite last year’s low property figures, once again took the biggest piece of the pie. However, slightly more money is distributed to sectors such as Agriculture and Education, compared to the same period in 2022, according to figures from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI).

In the first three months of this year, the Cuban State invested four thousand pesos in Business and Real Estate and Rental Services, which implies an increase to 4,677 million invested between January and March of last year.

At the same time, the percentage distributed to this line has decreased, considering that in 2022 32% of the total investment, which was 14,477 million, was consolidated. The aforementioned services at this time took 23 percent of the state’s investment.

Compared to the previous year, agriculture, livestock and forestry sectors benefited, with 585 million compared to 387 million last year, as well as Education, where they received 87 million pesos in the first half of 2022, almost tripled to 253. million for the first time this year in three months.

But when looking at the percentage of investment that the government invests in these branches, it is the first 2.9% of the total income, compared to 2.7% of the previous year. The second went from 0.6% in 2022 to 1.2%.

The supply of Electricity, Gas and Water received more money in the first three months of this year (1,990 million) than in the previous quarter (1,475 million), although in 2022 that amount represented 10.2% and in the present year it represented 9.8. % of the total investment.

In Construction, the percentage of investment almost doubled, from 1.3% in 2022 to 2.5% in 2023. The same happened with the Public Administration, Defense and Social Security, which received 2, 3% in 2022 and benefited this year. with 5.2%.

As for the Hotels and Restaurants branch, this year it received more than double the percentage of the total amount than last year. It went from 274 million (1.9%) to 915 million (4.5%).

Public Health and Social Assistance, despite the fact that the Cuban Government continues to show them the achievements of the Revolution, between January and March 2012, 198 million pesos have been invested in them, in barely 1.4% of the total transferred. But even fewer resources were dedicated to the same period of 2023, when the investment figure was 195 thousand pesos, 1% of all investment.

The sugar industry, once the engine of the Cuban economy, has become Cinderella. If in the first semester of 2022 he received 143 million pesos, 1.1% of the state’s investment, this year 103 million were allocated to him, 0.5%.

Fishing is also in the doldrums: 94 million (0.6%) in 2022 and 83 million (0.4%). But Miguel Diaz-Canel has already recognized at the end of the year: Cuba has a fishing law, but there are no fish, or at least no Cubans.

The investment in the provinces of Havana continues to benefit the most, despite the fact that the amount absorbed in the first three months of 2023 (374 million) is less than 632 million in the same period last year.
